Migration – the (forced) relocation to another home – has occupied a special place in world literature since the Odyssey. In today’s political climate, the unique stories of migrants and refugees are often overshadowed by their political status. Bridge Stories is a project that gives newcomers a platform for sharing their stories and literary creations with the audience. In collaboration with authors and performing artists, the participants translated their stories into a poetic performance that will premiere at the Passa Porta Festival.

bridge stories: more than a literary course

The literary performance you will see at Beursschouwburg is the result of a series of workshops organized by Cinemaximiliaan since 2023 with Passa Porta's support. Cinemaximiliaan’s team set off to the camp of tents around the Petit-Château asylum centre, looking for people to participate in the writing workshops. The workshops took place at Passa Porta and other locations in Brussels. Each workshop was led by an established author. Besides writing and storytelling, the workshops were also an opportunity to cook and eat together. People came together and were able to build new social contacts, learn informally and boost their self-confidence.

cinemaximiliaan

Cinemaximiliaan is a sociocultural organization that since 2015 has been screening films for a diverse audience and making films with and by newcomers. In 2021 Cinemaximiliaan’s scope was extended to include other art forms, such as music, photography, literature, visual arts and theatre. Cinemaximiliaan’s activity remains unique in that it always involves the individual development of the participant within a collective artistic expression.

opportunities and encounters

The social vulnerability of their new existence as newcomers is hardly a strong basis for building a future. At Cinemaximiliaan, they find a place where they are valued and appreciated for who they are – a place that awakens their creativity and incorporates their rich cultural background.
