To mark the publication of Het einde en hoe het te overleven (The end and how to survive it), compilers Katrien Steyaert and Gaea Schoeters will talk to Jennifer Egan, Tommy Wieringa, Bart Moeyaert, Delphine Lecompte and others about death and everything that comes before.

Nothing in life is predictable, except death. Today we are living through a period that makes us reflect more than usual on that big question. How does one die and say goodbye? Gaea Schoeters and Katrien Steyaert went looking for answers for the series Het einde (The end), published in the literary supplement De Standaard der Letteren. Together with more than 100 writers, they looked death in the eye. The conclusion they soon drew was that conversations about death are always about life. These conversations have now been compiled in a book: Het einde en hoe het te overleven (The end and how to survive it).

Gaea and Katrien are now once more opening up the conversation, and this time we can watch. Jennifer Egan, Tommy Wieringa, Bart Moeyaert, Delphine Lecompte and others will come together on this unique occasion in a virtual room to read out texts and to talk about the end and everything that comes before. This unforgettable evening will hopefully help us to reflect and perhaps also to find inspiration or comfort.

About the authors:

Gaea Schoeters (b. 1976, Belgium) writes novels, theatre texts and opera librettos. Sometimes she (secretly) tries her hand at poetry. She also writes for De Standaard der Letteren, and in her free time she sometimes rages against the world in columns and opinion pieces, but always with the best of intentions.

Katrien Steyaert (b. 1982, Belgium) writes as a freelance journalist for, among others, De Standaard, Knack Weekend, KU Leuven and Iedereen Leest. She also regularly interviews writers and readers, and publishes non-fiction books, such as 1914-1918: 100 jaar later.

Jennifer Egan (b. 1962, US) is the writer behind the world-famous novels A Visit from the Goon Squad, which won the Pulitzer Prize, and Manhattan Beach.

Tommy Wieringa (b. 1967, Netherlands) is the author of, among others, Joe Speedboot, his breakthrough novel, and Caesarion. He won the Libris Literature Prize for Dit zijn de namen and the Bookspot Literature Prize for De heilige Rita.

Bart Moeyaert (b. 1964, Belgium) debuted in 1983 with the classic Duet met valse noten. Since then he has published a series of international bestsellers. He writes novels, poetry and theatre texts, and is the winner of the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award.

Delphine Lecompte (b. 1978, Belgium) debuted in 2004 in English with the novel Kittens in the Boiler, before switching to poetry in Dutch, her mother tongue. Her poetry collection De dieren in mij won the C. Buddingh’ Prize. It was followed by nine poetry collections.

P.F. Thomése (1958, Netherlands) is a novelist, essayist, polemicist, storyteller, ironist and sharp cultural critic. Schaduwkind (Shadow Child) centres on the death of his baby daughter.

Nino Haratischwili (b. 1983, Georgia) gained worldwide fame with her monumental family epic The Eighth Life (for Brilka). She lives in Hamburg and also works for the theatre. In 2019 she was in residence at Passa Porta and was a guest at the Passa Porta Festival.
