Anne-James Chaton (voice, sampler), Thurston Moore (voice recording) and Jean-Michel Espitallier (drums) pay tribute to John Giorno in a sound piece constructed around Welcoming the Flowers.
Drawing on these ‘poem prints’ and their reading by Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth), the two poets weave sound loops which continue Giorno’s legacy of rhythms, sounds, stimuli and gestures rhythmically, hauntingly or restlessly, contrapuntally or atonally. The result is a recalcitrant soundscape, a timeless sensuality.
Throughout his life, the artist John Giorno, who passed away in October 2019 at age 82, sought to make words leap off the page and to make poetry as widely accessible as possible.
