Geneviève Letarte
Geneviève Letarte lives in Montreal, where her writing practice takes various forms. She is the author of four novels, including Souvent la nuit tu te réveilles (2002) and Les Vertiges Molino (1996), and two collections of poems: L’année d’après (2014) and Tout bas très fort(2004), both published by Écrits des Forges. Renowned for her literary shows and performances, such as Poèmes en pyjama (Festival Voix d’Amériques, 2011) and Dans la voix de quelqu’un (Studio de la place des arts, 2004), she has also recorded three CDs of songs, of which the latest, Âmes soûles, was released in 2007 on the label Ambiances magnétiques.
As a translator, Geneviève Letarte has turned her interest to the work of Virginia Woolf (Une prose passionnée et autres essais inédits, 2005) and Mavis Gallant (Le Weekend en Bourgogne, 2010), for which she was a finalist of the Governor General’s Award in Canada. She sits on the editorial board of the literary and cultural review L’Inconvénient, in which she publishes a column. She has contributed to several literary reviews in Quebec, France and the United States.
The holder of a master’s degree in creative writing from the Université du Québec in Montreal, Geneviève Letarte has taught creative writing at the Université de Sherbrooke and conducted poetry workshops in primary schools. She has taken part in cultural mediation projects in Montreal, including a read-aloud reading group at Librairie Olivieri and a public-writing project at the Dare-Dare multidisciplinary centre.
Geneviève Letarte has been writer in residence at the Banff Centre (Alberta), Yaddo (United States) and the Studio du Québec in Paris. She has participated in many cultural events in Quebec and Canada, in France, Mexico, Cuba and Armenia.
During her residency in Passa Porta, Geneviève Letarte will pursue a poetic project that centres on the notion of wandering.
