Open Call: Creative Writing Masterclass for Refugees & Asylum Seekers
Fully Funded. Limited Spots Available.
This course, founded by author Sulaiman Addonia and fully supported by CELA and Passa Porta, the International House of Literature in Brussels, is specifically designed for those who want to explore their passion for writing but haven’t yet found the space, confidence, or guidance to do so.
It’s time to take that first step and transform your love for storytelling into powerful narratives - whether your inspiration comes from fantasy worlds, personal experiences, memories of home, poetry, reflections on identity, the simple joy of writing, or ideas for short stories waiting to be explored. This masterclass is an opportunity to discover your voice, develop your craft, and shape your stories in the way you want to tell them.
What You’ll Gain:
This hands-on masterclass will equip you with the essential skills to tell your story your way. You will:
- Boost your confidence as a writer
- Discover and embrace your unique voice
- Learn the basics of plot creation, characterisation, dialogue, style, and more
- Receive expert feedback and practical tips to edit and revise your work
- Have the chance to meet established writers and discuss your journey
Your Path to the Stage
As part of the course, you will have the opportunity to perform your work at two exciting and prestigious events:
- The forthcoming edition of the international, award-winning Asmara-Addis Literary Festival (In Exile), to be held in Brussels in October.
- An evening at Passa Porta (details to be confirmed), giving you the chance to share your writing with a supportive audience in one of Europe’s renowned houses of literature.
By the end of the course, you’ll have a working draft of your story and the tools to continue writing beyond the masterclass. Previous participants have gone on to present their work at prestigious literary festivals, such as the Asmara-Addis Literary Festival and the Bozar Afropolitan Festival.
