Have you ever wanted to know what your dozing seatmate is thinking about as they lean their head against the bus window or where commuters go once they’ve reached their terminus? And have you ever caught yourself listening in on a conversation in the metro? The international house of literature Passa Porta has teamed up with Muntpunt, Le 140 and La Foire du Livre to bring you ‘Brussels City of Stories: Connections’, a long-term project to gather stories from the people of Brussels that will culminate on 4 June in a one-day festival with a mobile programme, like the bodies moving through the city.
This new edition involved twenty associations from the sociocultural sector in various municipalities working to collect a large number of funny, zany, captivating or touching stories on this theme.
On 4 June the Rogier / De Brouckère / Central Station / Bourse / Parc stations will be used as rallying points, points of departure or arrival for pop-up exhibitions and poetic or surprising performances that will seek to re-enchant the network of the city centre.
On the programme
Fixed exhibitions in stations and pop-up activities, poetic and offbeat readings of Brussels public transport by the Cinemaximiliaan platform, an installation by artists Juan Pablo Plazas and Axelle Verkempinck, exhibitions of dozens of children’s drawings, a workshop with comic book artist Juliette Boutant on the theme of the ‘safe space’ in metros, trams and buses, wandering individual readings of brand-new texts by Belgian writers, a vast participatory fresco on Place de la Bourse, a poetic walk with Joris Iven … Spread along the route, all the events of the festival will be within reach of a metro ticket. A ‘Brussels City of Stories’ gazette will be distributed at various locations.
Moving along the alleys of the Brussels Park thanks to a mobile bookshop (Bouquinerie Nomade), a participative exquisite corpse (FMDO) and the writing of personalized poems (the Slameke collective), the day will reach its terminus at the Vaux-Hall. From 17:00, author and slammer Marie Darah (FR) will take to the festival stage while writer and performer Arno Boey (NL) will alternate between readings of texts and performances resulting from various writing workshops (Isabelle Wéry and the Schaerbeek public welfare centre, the Brussels Writers Circle, Pieter Delfosse and Muntpunt).
