The day before the Passa Porta Festival opens, Malaysian author Tash Aw will release his fifth book, The South, about two young men who discover their desire for each other during a scorching summer. Tash Aw will be interviewed Angelo Tijssens, a great admirer of his work.
international success
Tash Aw has written four novels, among them We, the Survivors and Strangers on a Pier, both of which were nominated for the Los Angeles Book Prize. The winner of the Whitbread Prize and the Commonwealth Prize, he received the O. Henry Award and was twice longlisted for the Booker Prize. His work has been translated into twenty-three languages.
the south
His fifth novel, The South, an intimate story about love, legacy and regret in a rapidly changing world, will be published in March. The young Jay travels with his family to the estate in southern Malaysia that his deceased grandfather left them. The orchards have been abandoned and the fields have dried out, but his father sends him out to work the land anyway, together with Chuan, the son of the overseer. In the suffocating heat, love blossoms between Jay and Chuan, but the legacy of the estate weighs heavily on all members of the family, and Jay’s mother Sui Ching is forced to face what she sacrificed for her husband and children.
a regular guest
In 2023 Tash Aw was a guest at the Passa Porta Festival for the first time. His double interview with Claudia Durastanti was then very well received. We are delighted that he can join us again. This time, he will be interviewed by Angelo Tijssens, author of The Edges and Het einde van de straat.
