from kerala to now
After her mother died, Arundhati Roy set out to grasp the feelings she held for the woman she had broken free from at age 18, ‘not because I didn’t love her, but in order to be able to continue to love her’. She describes her life, from her childhood in Kerala, where her single mother founded a school, through the award-winning novels and essays she has written, to the death of ‘Mother Mary’.
fearless voice
In 2023 Arundhati Roy was awarded the prestigious European Essay Prize for her work and in 2024 the PEN Pinter Prize for telling ‘urgent stories of injustice with wit and beauty’. The prize honours writers who speak out forcefully and often under dangerous circumstances – as Roy has been doing for decades, with courage, sharpness and moral clarity.
felle kracht
Roy’s latest book, which combines the grandeur, scope and depth of her novels with the passion, political clarity and warmth of her essays, is an ode to freedom, a tribute to stubborn love and uncompromising fearlessness. Mother Mary Comes To Me describes the complex relationship with the fiery force that shaped Arundhati’s life as a woman, as an activist and as a writer: her mother.

Meet the Author : Alice Zeniter
