At the Oscars ceremony, it was Jessie Buckley who was in the spotlight for her role in the film adaptation of Hamnet, but author Maggie O’Farrell has attended her fair share of award ceremonies too: with seven literary prizes to her name, the Irish-British author, whose work has been translated into more than 30 languages, is one of the most beloved and widely acclaimed writers today. She will be talking to Annelies Beck at Bozar about her magnificent new novel, Land.

In her new historical novel Land, Maggie O’Farrell takes us back to the period before and after the Irish Famine (1845–50). Tomás and his ten-year-old son Liam are working on a major project to map the whole of Ireland. However, a disturbing encounter changes everything and determines the fate of every member of their family forever. Land is as splendid and unpredictable as the Irish landscape, a story of separation and reunion, colonization and rebellion.

She was certainly not a complete unknown, therefore, but the film adaptation of Hamnet, with Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal in the lead roles, put her even more in the spotlight. With her tenth novel, Land, based on her own family history, she proves herself more ambitious and committed than ever.

Maggie O’Farrell wrote the highly acclaimed memoir I Am I Am I Am (2017). She is also the author of several award-winning novels. Hamnet, Waterstones Book of the Year and winner of the Women’s Prize for Fiction, ensured her international breakthrough in 2020. Her latest novel, Land, was published in June this year.

Annelies Beck (b. 1973) is a writer and journalist who anchors the TV programme Terzake. She is also the author of two novels: Over het kanaal (2011), a historical novel set during World War I, and Toekomstkoorts (2019), about a Belgian attempt at colonization in Brazil.
