Ouverture: Reni Eddo-Lodge
Reni Eddo-Lodge’s relation to the reader(s) must by necessity be a strong one: after all, she was driven to write a book as a result of reactions to her texts. The Passa Porta Festival invited her to write a new text on the topic, which she will read out followed by an interview on this subject.
From the article to the book
When Reni Eddo-Lodge wrote on her blog a post titled ‘Why I’m no longer talking to white people about race’, she didn’t expect to draw so many reactions from her readers. In fact, they are the ones who drove her to continue the discussion and to document the subject of her article in a book.
Indeed, many of them wanted to know how to fight with her against structural racism. Or to share their own experiences. In any case, they showed the author that the subject she had raised touched people.
Do you write for someone in particular?
Five years after that famous post, the Passa Porta Festival has asked Reni Eddo-Lodge to write a text on her relation to the reader(s). Does she think about her readers when she writes? Has that relation evolved as she moved from blog to book, and then to her second book? What is a good reader? And what is she herself reading?
The opening event of the Festival, of which one of the red threads is precisely ‘the reader’, will cover these themes. Following the reading, Reni Eddo-Lodge exchanges thoughts with Dorrie Wilson on the subject.
Reni Eddo-Lodge will also be present on Sunday 31 March at the KVS where she will talk about structural racism, in Europe and in Belgium, together with Melat G. Nigussie and Lauren Bastide.
