The well-known Palestinian-Syrian poet Ghayath Almadhoun published in 2024 I Have Brought You a Severed Hand, a collection of furious texts about his homelands. Sahar Mousa is a poet from Gaza who is currently staying at the PEN flat in Antwerp. They will talk about life and their work.

Ghayath Almadhou describes the prose poems gathered in his latest collection as ‘texts and notes’. One reviewer called them ‘haunting texts’, and it is certain that they were written in a very clear and direct manner and will linger in your head for days.

PEN brings together authors from around the world who stand up for the physical and literary freedom of all writers, with special attention for authors from war zones. The Flemish branch does this by organizing events and actions and offering writers a place of residence. Palestinian poet Sahar Mousa is currently staying in Antwerp.

Ghayath Almadhoun and Sahar Mousa will be in conversation with philosopher and writer Sigrid Wallaert at the Passa Porta Festival. They will discuss justice, activism and writing in times of war, and will read from their poetry.

about the authors

Ghayath Almadhoun (b. 1979) is a Syrian-Palestinian-Swedish poet. He was born in the Palestinian refugee camp Yarmouk in Damascus to a Palestinian father and a Syrian mother. Almadhoun lives alternately in Stockholm and Berlin.

Sahar Mousa is from Gaza. She often writes about political polarization, social injustice and the poor general condition of the Palestinian people.

about the moderator

Öznur Karaca (1977) werkt als taalexpert. Ze studeerde Germaanse Talen aan de Universiteit Gent en schrijft in diverse genres: recensies, copywriting en comedy. Als stand-upcomedian creëerde ze in 2008 haar eerste onewomanshow, Bleek. In wat ze schrijft, speelt haar interesse voor psychologie een rol, of het nu in haar comedy is, waarin ze schertst met gangbare vooroordelen in Vlaanderen, of in haar debuutroman, Marsepeinen vingers.
