Those who see little overlap between fashion and literature have probably never heard of Charlie Porter. His work as a fashion journalist and critic sheds new light on the poetic complexity of the objects with which we envelop our bodies. In his internationally acclaimed books, What Artists Wear and Bring No Clothes, Porter uses the wardrobes of writers and artists to explore the relationship between fashion as a tool of conformist ideologies and fashion as a shield and weapon for (artistic) self-expression. On Saturday, Porter will discuss his move to fiction with fashion journalist and curator Aya Noël.

Aya Noël talks to pioneering fashion journalist Charlie Porter about his first novel, Nova Scotia House.

nova scotia house

Porter’s first novel takes us to the heart of a relationship, a community and an era. Nova Scotia House is both a love story and a lament, with its gentle treatment of the trauma of the AIDS pandemic amidst the joys and creativity of queer life.
