The Bee Sting was without doubt one of the most important books of the past two years. Published in 2023, this big novel was shortlisted for the Booker Prize and was on many book-of-the-year lists.

family novel

The Barnes family struggles with financial, emotional, relational and climatological problems that, in the course of the story, only escalate, leading to chaos. The word ‘dysfunctional’ seems made for the father Dickie, the mother Imelda, the daughter Cassie and the son PJ, who all manage to get themselves, and each other, into more and more trouble.

franzen and homes

The four family members tell their story in turn, and Murray succeeds in giving each of them their own voice and in weaving their stories so ingeniously that the reader feels like a resident of the Irish village they live in. The Bee Sting brings to mind Jonathan Franzen and A.M. Homes and is both extremely funny and highly disturbing.

skippy

With The Bee Sting, Murray adds another classic novel, after Skippy Dies, to the rich literature of Ireland. This epic tragicomedy deals with themes such as mourning, global warming, sexual violence and homophobia, but is above all a compelling tragedy of fate that hurtles towards a particularly gripping conclusion. With his debut Kala, fellow Irishman Colin Walsh wrote an equally haunting novel about a drama in an Irish village. A great admirer of Murray’s work, he is looking forward to interviewing him.
