2024 - Marcello Quintanilha
Marcello Quintanilha (b. 1971, Niterói) is a Brazilian writer and comic book artist.
Self-taught, Marcello began publishing in 1988, drawing horror and martial arts comics. In 1999 he published his first graphic novel Fealdade de Fabiano Gorila. Three years later he moved to Barcelona, taking charge of the drawings for the series Sept Balles pour Oxford (2003-12), with scripts by Jorge Zentner and Montecarlo. In 2005, after a trip to the capital of Bahia, he launched Salvador, an organic mix between prose and illustration. Then came Sábado dos meus amores (2009) and Almas Públicas (2011). In 2012, he adapted the classic novel O Ateneu by Brazilian novelist Raul Pompeia.
Tungstênio (2014) was an international success that earned Quintanilha several awards, including his first award at Angoulême, the Fauve Polar. In 2018 the film adaptation by director Heitor Dhalia was released in Brazilian cinemas. Talco de Vidro was published in 2015, followed by Hinário Nacional (2016), Todos os Santos (2018), and Luzes de Niterói (2018). In 2020 came his first novel, Deserama.
His most recent work is Listen beautiful Márcia (2021), which put Quintanilha's name in history as the first Brazilian to receive the Fauve D'Or, the main award of the Angoulême Festival and one of the most prestigious in the comic industry. He currently continues to live and work in Barcelona.
During his residency at Passa Porta Marcello will be working on a new graphic novel about a former Nazi officer acting as a double agent during the Cold War working for both the Russians and the Americans. The main character is based in Brussels and then heads for Brazil, where the city of Brazilia is being built and Oscar Niemeyer’s architecture is conquering the world.
