Meet Canadian poet and novelist Nyla Matuk, Passa Porta's writer in residence in January and February 2026.

In this video portrait by director Sarah Baur and cinematographer Frederik Van Melle, Nyla talks about the influence of her multilingual childhood on her poetry, her interest in the paintings of Sonia Delaunay, and her novel Leila and Khaled, which is set in Palestine and will be published in Canada later this year. She also reads a poem from Fata Morgana, the manuscript she is completing in Brussels.

This residency is made possible with the support of the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles and the Conseil des Arts et des Lettres du Québec (CALQ).

"Sometimes there is tension between the aesthetical and the political."
Nyla Matuk
