When Rainald Goetz writes about a psychiatric clinic, he locks you up. When he writes about rave parties, he puts you on the dance floor. His books are trips, addictive and mind-expanding. Thanks to the coruscating translations by Sebastian Roth, his books about tripping, at once addictive and mind-expanding, are now also available in Dutch. Give in.

doctor goetz

Rainald Goetz studied medicine before briefly working as a psychiatrist. He drew on this experience for Insane, his debut novel from 1983 in which a young punk psychiatrist tries to swim against the current and opposes the usual electroshock therapy. The only thing he achieves, however, is a deeper experience of madness than he would like. For Dr Rainald Goetz, Insane marked the end of his medical career and the beginning of a successful writing career.

techno lit

In Rave, Goetz throws himself into the party scene and techno culture of the 1990s. And you can take that literally: there are few authors who so wholeheartedly embrace the subject of their books. He writes like a tireless dancer, intensely and without limits. Sweat drips from the pages and rhythm takes precedence over cohesion. Rave is a sensation you don’t often experience as a reader.

excess

Drawing on Goetz’s work, Dutch writer Persis Bekkering wrote her own rave book, Exces. She will lead the dance, while translator Sebastian Roth will read from Rave. It promises to be a compelling moment.

about the author

Rainald Goetz worked briefly as a psychiatrist before choosing to devote himself to writing. Ever since his debut, Insane, in 1983, he has combined neo-expressionism with social realism and the nervous unrestrainedness of beat and pop authors. Drawing on a cultural tradition that encompasses avant-garde philosophers as well as the punk and rave scenes, Goetz made a name for himself as a keen observer of the media and pop culture. He has won just about every major literary and theatre award in the German-speaking realm, including the Georg Büchner Prize in 2015. Goetz lives and works in Berlin.

about the moderator

Persis Bekkering made her debut with the novel Een heldenleven (Prometheus, 2018), nominated for the ANV Debutant Prize. She writes essays and columns as well as literary and art reviews for NRC Handelsblad and de Nederlandse Boekengids, among others. She is also on the editorial staff of the magazine nY. Her second novel, Exces, about the rave movement as a ritual farewell to the future, was published in 2021.
